Smile a Lie for Me
When Rin looks outside, something like thunder rumbles the earth, shakes it with a distant roar. A brillaint arc of white-blue streaks across the sky of ink, and she almost thinks that it is her god, almost thinks that he will come.
The only thing that comes is rain.
The rain is so heavy and constant, that when he walks into her hut--dry and pristine--she knows that the night is over. It was spent with the rhythmn of the rain and the whispers of the wind. He gives her a silent look, and she can see that the apology is there. It is one of his rarest looks. He had forgotten that yesterday was important. He is unhappy when she is unhappy. So, she smiles for him; she knows it will make him happy.
It is a lie, that smile.
Many winters later when she looks outside, something like fire lights up the sky, brilliant and shimmering as it ripples across the clouds. She almost thinks that it is her god, and hopes that he will not come.
The only thing that comes is her.
Her body is so heavy with ache and need and sweat, that when he walks in--calm and cold--she knows that the night is over. It was spent with the rhythmn of rocking bodies and the whispers of a spider. She gives him a silent look, and he can see that the guilt is there. It is one of her rarest looks. He had forgotten that yesterday was important, and she does not even care. She hates it when he is unhappy. So, she smiles for him; she knows it will make him happy.
It is a lie, that smile.
